The Spirit of Wing Chun

When teaching his students in Hong Kong over 60 years ago, Ip Man is known to have said, "Regardless of who starts first, ability decides seniority in Wing Chun." With this statement, we believe Ip Man was trying to tell his students that respect simply for tradition's sake is not part of the Wing Chun Lineage that he wanted to create. We believe Ip Man meant that only application can verify theory and that if you want seniority, you have to be willing to work harder than the next person. This is the Spirit of Wing Chun... truth and hard work! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqVlh69ZGgQ

If you want to be a part of The Dragon Institute, you're going to have to realize very quickly that there is no such thing as mistakes. You'll see that there's no room for fear of failure here. What most people see as failure, we see as progress and development. Fear is a sign of letting your ego control you and egos simply don't last very long at The Dragon Institute.

I advocate sparring with substantial contact in every class. There's no question about it, if someone wants to learn to defend themselves, they need to be able to spar! http://www.orangecountymartialarts.info/2013/10/real-sparring-but-not-for-competition.html

Sparring is Required!

Know it upfront. In my Wing Chun classes, sparring is required!

Real Sparring But Not for Competition!

Although I am an advocate of sparring with substantial contact in every class, I don't advocate the use of Wing Chun for sports competitions. I teach that Wing Chun was intended only for self-defense / self-preservation.

I mean no disrespect towards sports-based martial arts, as long as they don't try to pass themselves off as self-defense. Competitions are a completely different mindset. It is important to me to make sure my students stay true to this mindset and don't get their muscle-memory confused.

With that being said, don't twist my message into an excuse not to spar. Sparring is one of the most important activities any martial artist can do. You need to spar and you need to hit. You need to learn to hit and be hit.

Just don't let competition change your mindset about what you are training for. Stay true to your purpose.

We train bare knuckle, remain standing up and in a t-shirt. We do this because we train for the street. We aren't concerned with training for the ring or for some other sports competition. Realistic Self-Defense

We train bare knuckle, standing up and in a t-shirt. We do this because we train for the street. We aren't concerned with training for the ring or for some other sports competition. We don't meet our attacker on the street and ask them to "hang on a second" while we put on our boxing gloves, tie on our karate robe or roll around on the ground. We train on our feet, make sure we stay there and take care of business as quickly as possible.

If you want to train a sport, train something else like jiu jitsu, muay thai kickboxing, tae kwon do. What we do isn't a sport. Realisic self-defense is not a competition or a rules-based match. We don't care about getting a championship trophy or holding a championship belt.

We don't train for ego either. We're not interested in how many people we can "take out" or how much of a bad ass others think we are. We're not some steroid-taking fight club that looks to beat people up. The last thing we want to do is actually have to use what we know on someone else.

However, if turns out that we need to protect ourselves or our families... make no mistake, we train in order to handle ourselves when it matters most!
