I was fortunate to attend a seminar by Master Kenneth Chung in Seattle recently. He is a short man with broad Herculean back (and shoulders) who leaves you with the impression that you stand among a giant. You know with certainty that you are in the presence of a real master having dedicated his life to the art since the 60’s. He states while unbalancing you effortlessly, as though all your martial training were just a single rain drop landing on an ocean of previous knowledge, “I use my knee. Power. I have no power. I have only a little energy; this is my contribution to Wing Chun.”

Did you know that despite what most people today think, Yip Man only substantially taught a few people - Leung Sheung, Lok Yiu, Chu Shong Tin and Wong Shun Leung? Others did not have anywhere as much direct, hands-on time with Yip Man. These four were largely responsible for instructing the other students. Through the mid-50s, most instruction was given by Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu. After they opened their own schools, Chu Shong Tin and Wong Shun Leung gave most of the instruction.

Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, was recently asked if her father ever told her stories about Ip Man. This was her response:



"My father didn't but my mom did. She told me my father truly loved and respected Yip Man (that's how my father spelled his name). He was loyal to him as his only teacher and all throughout his life, he always kept his wing chun skills and basics honed even though his own martial journey evolved. My father was thrilled to be able to introduce my brother to Yip Man and visited him everytime he came back to HK before Yip Man's passing. He truly thought of him as a father figure and was grateful to him for the philosophical thinking he instilled in him at such a young age."
